Koenig King Mechanical Winch

The Koenig King winch was made by the Koenig Iron Works company of Houston Texas. It was based of an oil derrick winch and was one of the first available steel cable drum winches available for the Land Rover in North America. It appeared with the Series II's and later into the later 60's when electric winches began to become common. There were two main types of the Koenig winch, one driven off the front of the engine (front mounted) and a second driven off the rear PTO on the gearbox. The front mounted version is far more common. To the right is a picture of the front crank version of the winch in action in the British Trans-Darien Expedition in the early 1960's (image from National Geographic we believe.
