Land Rover Production by Year

Original Author: Benjamin Smith (bens@fourfold.org)

Over the years the production numbers of the Land-Rover was reported. Since then the acutal build numbers of each model has been reported. This does not always match up. The "Total" column represents the officially reported numbers unless otherwise noted. The "Difference" column is simply the known totals minus the reported total. Either this indicates other unknown models, or that Land Rover made some addition errors in their reports.

Until Sept 1979 the Land-Rover production year was September to August.

Exact data for each model by year is not easily available since Rover changed to using chassis numbering systems that span many years. We do know the total that was made from 1962 to 1971 of each type. So a model was used to distribute them based on the reported totals for each year.

Notes on Series IIA Table
  1. I made a model to split up production over years if no year by year production data for that model is given. For low volume vehicles, an even distribution is assumed. For high volume production the model used was:
X = total Land Rover production for years 1..N
x[i] = is total Land Rover production for year i
Y = total model production for years 1..N
y[i] = is total model production for year i
      a = additive modification
So the number of a certain model built in year i would be: y[i]=Y/X*x[y]+a Additive modifications are due to assumtions such as the existence of the SIIA halfton would cause militarys to buy less 88" models because they are buying Halftons...

  2. CKDs (Complete Knock Downs (ie kits for foreign assembly)) are not included in productions figures and have to be assumed. For the years 1962-1970 a straight percentage is used that best fits the model (to make the data best fit overall for those years, so the assumtion is that CKD vehicles were a constant fractions of LR production). Other constant fraction periods should be obvious from the data. This was done to make the data add up since no other unknown models of Land Rover are known.

  3. Production totals based on predictions and weekly production data reported in LRO and LRW magazines.

Notes on Series III Table
  1. When totals production numbers are not available, all values for the year are summed to get a total
  2. See note [1] from Series IIA on the model used
  3. See note [2] from Series IIA on CKD
  4. When production data is lacking, sales data is used
  5. At the end of 1979 Land Rover changed chassis numbering system from a prefix of 3 numbers and a 5 digit sequence number to the worldwide VIN system, so tallyes by model type are no longer possible.
  6. James Taylor reports this number to be 100,126 but says that he thinks that it is wrong. I assumed that the 88" fugure was correct and extrapolated the 109" number based on the percent of 109" built in 1970.
  7. In 1972 approximately 416 Series IIB Forward Controls and 175 Half tons were built.

  • Land Rover production numbers were based on finanical year. Up to 1975 it ended on 26 Sept., In 1976 it ended on 31 Dec. Years listed are the calendar year in which most of the production fell (e.g. 1960 for the Sept 1959 to 26 Sept 1960 year)
  • An additional 2,363 Series III Land Rovers were built during Nov and Dec of 1979.

Notes from Current Production
  1. Officially Land Rover is calling the new style Range Rover, the "new Range Rover", I'm using the designation of mk II to differentiate from the Range Rover Classic.
  2. Approximation of the split.
  3. Total Production less than 68,621 because that was the record until 1994
  4. Total includes an approximation
