Series Land Rovers

Options: Robert Davis Engine Conversion

GM 4 cylinder engine conversions. All the fabrication work has been done to make up complete bolt in kits that exchange 1 to 1 for the original engine and use the stock frame mounts and radiator. These take about 6 hours to install; all you have to do is plug in the complete kits. We have been building them for over 10 years. You can also build your own kit or purchase (from us) some or all the custom components that are not available off the shelf. The options:

Buying your way towards a conversion

1. Cheaper initial investment.. $599 Buy an adapter and build your own kit by finding your own engine in a junkyard and figuring out how to make it work. Here's where to find an engine: They come stock in 2.5 liter displacement (151 cu in) and were used in Sunbirds, Monzas from 1977 - 1983 and Jeep CJ5 & CJ7 1980 - 1983 (must be the GM 151 4 cylinder Jeep engine and not the AMC 150). Please note: this option takes longer and could cost more in the long run.

Complete kits (about 6 hours to install)

1. For Series vehicles originally with 4 cylinder engines: Mid-range price - $2,950. The 2.5 liter (151 cu in) remanufactured crossflow engine kit. You supply the clutch and exhaust. There is no need to change original gearing and will allow your series to travel at highway speeds @70 mph and above.

2. For Series vehicles originally with 4 cylinder engine: Most expensive $4,200 Complete remanufactured 3.0 liter (183 cu in) engine kit based on the 151, but a stroked out remanufactured crossflow version. They take about 6 hours to install. Comes with everything including wiring. You add a 9.5 inch clutch and custom exhaust and drive away. Will easily pull high range diffs or the Ashcroft transfer box. This high performance engine is excellent on and off road and will never run out of power.

3. For Series vehicles originally with 6 cylinder engine: The $4,200 Complete remanufactured 3.0 liter (181 cu in) non-crossflow engine kit based on the 181 GM Marine power plant. They take about 6 hours to install. Comes with everything including wiring. You add a 9.5 inch clutch and custom exhaust and drive away. Will easily pull high range diffs or the Ashcroft transfer box. This high performance engine is excellent on and off road and will never run out of power.

Do it yourself

1. Do-it-yourself $1,299 Comes with used rebuildable GM 151 crossflow core engine and adapter ONLY. Same as #1, but with core engine.

2. Do-it-yourself $1,999 (almost a kit) Comes with used rebuildable GM 151 crossflow core engine, adapter, adapter mud shield, metal motor mounts, rubber motor mounts, intake manifold, intake plenum, accelerator linkage bracket, alternator mount, alternator adjustment bracket, and instruction sheet.

3. Do-it-yourself $1,299 (almost a kit, but you supply the engine) Comes with adapter, adapter mud shield, metal motor mounts, rubber motor mounts, intake manifold, intake plenum, accelerator linkage bracket, alternator mount, alternator adjustment bracket, and instruction sheet.

Non-crossflow and crossflow motors

4. Do-it-yourself 3.0 liter (183 cu in) $2,499 (almost a kit) Comes with used rebuildable GM 151 crossflow core engine, adapter, adapter mud shield, 3.0 liter crank seal mount, flywheel, pilot bushing, pilot bushing keeper tabs, metal motor mounts, rubber motor mounts, intake manifold, intake plenum, accelerator linkage bracket, alternator mount, alternator adjustment bracket, and instruction sheet.

5. Do-it-yourself 3.0 liter (183 cu in) $1,599 (almost a kit, but you supply the engine) Comes with adapter, adapter mud shield, 3.0 liter crank seal mount, flywheel, pilot bushing, pilot bushing keeper tabs, metal motor mounts, rubber motor mounts, intake manifold, intake plenum, accelerator linkage bracket, alternator mount, alternator adjustment bracket, and instruction sheet.

These do-it-yourself kits are just that, and I take no responsibility for user or machine shop errors. The instruction sheets contain assembly instructions with a list of all the off the shelf parts required. I get a minimum of 15 emails a week and with my schedule it is best to call with further questions ((757) 421-3504) as I do not have time to type out answers to all the questions for all the people that want more information to decide which option to choose. Usually am about 2-4 months behind schedule delivering the complete kits (see item #2). The do it your self kits are subject to availability. We recommend power brakes. Prices are for pickup in Chesapeake, VA. Crating and delivery to a shipper can be extra depending on which option you purchase. Buyer pays actual shipping costs. There is something here for everyone who is serious about converting to a more powerful engine.
