THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY

directed and produced by Jamie Uys

starring Nixau, Marius Weyers, Sandra Prinsloo, Louw Verwey, Jamie Uys

20th Century Fox (1984) (1909 min.), available from CBS/Fox Video ($19.39)

The ultimate Land Rover movie and a cult classic besides, this film is crammed with disarming slapstick. An innocent and peaceful Kalahari Bushman walks to the "edge of the world" to return an unwanted Coke bottle "to the gods". Along the way he meets the "civilized" world, including a dropout schoolteacher, an oafish microbiologist, and a gang of incompetent terrorists. But the real star is the "Antichrist", a Series One with a mind of its own. As all the protagonists and antagonists converge in a farcical climax, the Land Rover ("steered" by the Bushman, who has never seen a vehicle, let alone driven one) saves the day.
