101" FC: Production

The 101 was first designed in the late 1960s. Between 9 and 11 prototypes were built between 1968 and 1971. (There is some discussion on if 101/FC/8a through 101/FC/8c are the same truck being rebuilt or are 3 different 101s that had similar numbers to sneak them past management. At first they all had 6 cylinder engines. Next a V8 from a Ford Falcon was tried. Lastly, the Rover V8 was used. The 45 101s built between 1972 and 1974 are pre-production 101s. The main production run was from 1975 to 1978.

All 101s built were the General Service (soft top), mostly painted bronze green. Three were painted Libyan Sand, 50 were painted Olive drab and 168 were painted Light Matt Khaki. 34.5% were built as left hand drive and 65.5% as right hand drive. 62% were 12 volt and 38% were 24 volt as originally built.

The British Military was the largest customer for the 101. Of the 2668 101s built, 2500 are said to have gone to the British Government. From reviewing the build records here is the data that I've been able to assemble. This is what I think went to the British Government.

Land Rover kept a few 101s for its self. Many of these were sold of around 1978 or 1979 to the public when they were surplus to Land Rovers needs.

In addition build records for 95600983, 95900055 and 95900411 were left blank implying that they were not built.

In 1994 Land Rover Owner, International published the following table of which years that the 101s were built in by type. There are no known Complete Knock Down (CKD) (unassembled 101s shipped to a destination for assembly) built even though a chassis number range was set aside for them.
