hello there I can thank you enough for all the information you've posted on your site regarding land rovers.I recently > > purchased a 1977 2.2 series III diesel and just love driving it.Its in great nick though I want to do my own repairs when necessary and regular maintenance so you're site is everything i need for the jobs.I was wondering if you've any idea of the MPG on these models as the fuel gage is a bit temperamental.also how can i tell if there is an over drive installed?

yours

Declan,

With overdrive you can get 18-20mpg on the highway if you don't drive too fast. A Fairey Overdrive will have a short black lever with a black knob aft and to the right of the gearshift lever. If you remove the center seat and the cover beneath you will see the overdrive bolted to the back of the transfer case, directly under the cross shaft for the parking brake. If there is nothing under that shaft (pull on the parking brake lever to see the shaft move), then there is no overdrive installed.
